Our Journey of Connecting Six Nations Polytechnic to ORION and Bridging the Digital Divide

Can you believe how fast technology has advanced in today’s modern era? Access to the internet advances research, empowers education, and fosters innovation, and unfortunately, many rural and Indigenous communities face challenges with accessing reliable connectivity. The digital divide is real and presents a significant gap between those with access to modern digital technology and those without it.

Connecting Six Nations Polytechnic to ORION and the NREN

ORION is committed to bridging this divide by connecting universities, colleges, hospitals, and other institutions across the province to an ultra-high-speed private network specifically designed for research and education. In July 2023, we achieved a historic milestone by connecting Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) to the ORION network, making them the first Indigenous owned and governed institution in Ontario to join Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN). Later that same year, the ORION and Six Nations Polytechnic communities celebrated this groundbreaking achievement.

This journey began 8 years ago with discussions to understand their needs. Through ongoing conversations, ORION built a meaningful relationship with Six Nations Polytechnic, addressing connectivity and infrastructure challenges together. This collaborative approach allowed ORION to develop and implement sustainable solutions tailored to the community.

Bridging the Digital Divide

ORION’s network provides greater reliability and security, enabling Six Nations Polytechnic to advance Indigenous knowledge and education. The enhanced connectivity has enabled Six Nations Polytechnic’s learning community to share data with other institutions and build new partnerships. With secure internet access, researchers and educators can now collaborate with peers across the province, fostering further innovation. It has also allowed Six Nations Polytechnic to redirect fiscally restrained IT resources to other priorities by using ORION’s suite of security offerings. Increased connectivity provides the SNP students and faculty with the connections they need to succeed, creating opportunities and empowering communities.

Bridging the digital divide is an ongoing journey, and we will continue our efforts to connect Indigenous institutions and rural communities. Each connection represents a milestone toward a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive future.

By bridging the digital divide, ORION is opening doors for researchers, educators, and innovators across Ontario. We will continue to collaborate with rural and Indigenous communities to enhance their connectivity. We look forward to building a more interconnected world.
